About the Author

Alice Batchelor Hambright is an artist, a poet, a musician, a writer, a mother, a grandmother, a teacher, a friend. She fancies herself pretty good with a computer, and she is planning to retire and move from the sea to the mountains with her good dogs in July 2017.

Follow her journey as she faces yet another big change in her life.  She will make mistakes.  She will overcome!  She will have sorrows and joys and maybe even love. One never knows....

She might even find her second childhood along the way.

In the end, it is her wish that her blog educates, inspires, and delights, but she'll settle for just making her readers think greater thoughts once in awhile.

Come.  Read.  Learn.  Laugh.  Enjoy!

    1. Cousins! Are you from near Cleveland County, NC or Cherokee County, SC? I'm always curious as to how far the family is scattered. I've recently met cousins from as far away as Texas and Arizona and even Alaska! Amazing.

Here is what I know about how I am related to William Humphries.

First, I should say my family tree doesn't fork a whole lot.

The William Humphries, who fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain as a Patriot (Whig) in the Revolutionary War, and his wife Marianne Walker were my DOUBLE Great-Great-Great-Great Grandparents.

I'll explain below. Do you see any familiar names?

The tree from William and Marianne Humphries merges when John T. Humphries married Adalissa "Lessie" Humphries (#4 Below) in my family tree. Their grandfathers, John and Samuel, were brothers. Both were children of William and Marianne.

Here is how it goes from parents to children:

Paternal John T. Humphries' Line (See #4 Below)
      1. William Humphries-Marianne Walker
      2. John Humphries-Mary Jane Clary
      3. Langdon L. Humphries-Frances Alice "Fannie" Bridges
      4. John T. Humphries-Adalissa "Lessie" Humphries
      5. Janie Susan Humphries-Dawson Marcus "Boss" Batchelor
      6. Ruby Batchelor-Robert "Thomas" Batchelor
      7. Me

Maternal Adalissa "Lessie" Humphries Line (See #4 Below)
      1. William Humphries-Marianne Walker
      2. Samuel Humphries-Nancy McCraw
      3. Sylvester Humphries-Margaret Lemmons
      4. Adalissa "Lessie" Humphries-John T. Humphries
      5. Janie Susan Humphries-Dawson Marcus "Boss" Batchelor
      6. Ruby Batchelor-Robert "Thomas" Batchelor
      7. Me

Is Mary Elizabeth a sister of Sylvester???

Or is she from one of the "William" brothers somewhere down the line?

Did you have your DNA done?

      I find genetics fascinating.

    2. My blog post about William Humphries only contains a portion of the above information, as you probably know. I've done more research on the Humphries line since I wrote it.

  2. I am not sure. Ancestry won't show all of her siblings. Her father was Drewery Humphries 1833-1915, William Humphries 1794, John Humphries 1768- 1851, then William Humphries 1745-1827. I have the book of the list of soldiers who fought in the battle of Kings Mountain, and I know he lost a leg to a cannon ball but survived until around age 60.

  3. No on DNA. I have a Jolley book and followed research from what I found. If you go to the Broad River Genealogical Society in Shelby, NC they may have a book of Humphries ancestry, especially since Humphries is one of the few to help build Cleveland County.

  4. I hope I didn't overwhelm you too much. I have a little bit information. My Great Grand Father was James William Jolley. He worked with my 3rd Cousin Ben Humphries, to put together Jolly/Jolley ancestor book. If you are interested, I might be able to help you find a connection.

  5. Hi! My name is Megan Hulings, from Pennsylvania, and I was doing some research on my family history a while back. I found out my father is descended from Marquis Jean Paul Frederick de Hulingues and his bride Isabel(la?) du Portal. However, I can't find much about Jean Paul's parentage. If you know anything, could you let me know? Also, it's nice to meet you!

  6. The Marquis Jean Paul Frederick de Hulingues was born in Bearnès, Lot-et-Garonne, Aquitaine, France where he was Marquis in the early 1500s. His parents would have most likely held that same title in the late 1400s. Unfortunately, I don't have their names. Many records of the Huguenots were destroyed during the Saint Bartholomew's Massacre years, so when you go back that far in France, it is hard to find information. Please let me know if you find anything!

Some more information about Isabella du Portal's family is in this blog post: https://alicessilveryears.blogspot.com/2016/06/my-original-huguenot-ancestors-true.html

Enjoy and thank you for posting!
